Perfect time to come Apple Picking!

October 10, 2014 Katrina McAlexander

I personally invite you all out these next few weekends in October to come apple picking at Mt. View Orchards.  Now is time of year to gather your friends and family and make the lovely trip out to our small old fashioned farm located at the base of the majestic Mt. Hood.  All the leaves on the farm are turning golden, deep burgundy, bright red or school bus yellow so it is a picturesque time of year as your walk through our farm or go for a hay ride around the perimeter of our farm. We grow over 50 different kinds of apples and they are ready to be picked this month. Come for an apple picking party this weekend and take home some of the tastiest apples around.  We are having an endless summer this Autumn and the weather is going to be warm again this weekend so pack up a picnic lunch and plan to come pick some farm fresh apples today.

We are so grateful for the many local customers who come each week to buy fresh fruit from our orchard. It really means the world to us and my heart is always so full of gratitude when our farming family shows up to support us and keep us going.&nbs…

Its the most wonderful time of the year at Mt. View Orchards. The air is filled with mouthwatering sweetness.  I know there are are many weekend adventure options out there and but I would be honored if you would come and enjoy the fruit of our labor this October.  We need more farming friends and good homes for our 2014's apple crop. The apples this year are so abundant, clean and delicious.  Our farm really is your farm and enjoying your favorite kind of apple as a snack, making apple sauce, apple pie, apple crisp, adding them to salads, baked apples and drying apples will fill all your senses with delight and your homes will smell heavenly.  Apples are stunning to behold on the trees.  They are so inviting to reach up for and pick from the trees.  They smell absolutely sweet and juicy.   They make a perfect crunch sound in your ears as your enjoy them and they fill your taste buds with tart pleasure.    Some of the many varieties we grow here on our farm are Winter Bananas, Romes, Fugis, Jonagolds(red and gold), Honeycrisps, Golden Delicious, Red Delicious, Akanes, Galas, Granny Smiths, Gravensteins, Newtown Pippins, Kings, Braeburns, Jonathans, Criterions, McIntosh, Melrose, Empires, Spartans, and Spitzenburg apples. Please get the word out to your neighbors about our small family farm and I hope to see you soon for apple picking at Mt. View Orchards. xoxo, your grateful farmer.

(We also have some of the sweetest blueberries we have ever sold on the farm right now and its not to late to get some.  But they are the last of the season so hurry on up friends if you want to freeze some for the coming year.)

Teaching your children where there fruit comes from and what an apple tree looks like is very key to their awareness of why we need small family farms and farmers.  Small family farms are sadly on the decline and the only way for farmers to maintain their land is by having loyal customers that for go getting their fruit at big box stores but chose to buy directly from their farmer.  Thank you for choosing to partner with us and helping to save the family farm.

Grateful

The grateful farmer is a blog about a woman who left her job in the the city to come home to save the family farm.  My desire is to candidly share my journey learning how to farm a 50 acre Orchard at the base of Mt. Hood. I invite you to follow along as I share seasonal recipes, childhood memories, farming successes and failures. Please enjoy the Orchard photos collaging the beautiful seasons and harvests here at Mt. View Orchards. I am grateful and humbled that are you are reading along and want you to know that my farm is your farm.

Honeycrisp apples are a favorite @mtvieworchards and today we are going to be sharing some forward with our local food bank. Apples are extremely rich in important antioxidants, flavanoids, and dietary fiber. The phytonutrients and antioxidants in apples may help reduce the risk of developing cancer, hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease. @mtvieworchards we believe everyone deserves to enjoy the best of our 2018 local apple harvests. We have them in our farm stand as well if you want to pick some up for your lunches. #mtvieworchards #afarmthatcares #afarmthatgathers #afarmthatgivesback #apples #honeycrisps
