Hard Cider School!

December 20, 2014 Katrina McAlexander

This past week I went up to the Northwest Agriculture Business Center with my baby brother to learn the science behind making a delicious hard cider. I have been brain storming of ways to diversify the orchard and have had requests from our customers wondering if we make hard cider at Mt. View.  I adore hard cider and order it often when out to dinner because it is the perfect drink.  Its refreshing, tastes like you are drinking an apple and is slightly sweet.

At Mt. View Orchards happy customers are our biggest accomplishment and we hope to be able to make and sell hard cider one day to share with you all.  One thing that was rather sobering was the amount of cost it really takes to get all the equipment and to get up to code before you can get your product to your store.  But I imagine, with some strategic saving and planning that one day this dream will become a reality. I have always been a big believer in dreams that are seemly impossible.

Dr. Peter Mitchell was our enthusiastic and world renowned professor.  He has won many gold medals on his stellar hard ciders and was truly a delight to listen to.  He has a wealth of experience and has been making and instructing for over 30 years.  I am very much inspired to take a field trip next year to visit his cidery in England.  I also have the goal of wanting to try a different hard cider every week to get better at sensory analysis.  I found out that I have an above average nose and could distinguish many different types of esters and phenolics. There were many smells that I could read immediately and one off putting smell that tastes like a mouse or rodent that I could differentiate in a millisecond after putting it into my mouth.  This gave me the nick name the "mouser" because I have quite the olfactory gift.  Also quite the gag reflex but thats another story all together.

Spending a week away from the farm and learning a new skill was truly a gift and I am so grateful for the opportunity and to spend some time also with my brother, Ryan.  A win/win indeed.  No one makes me laugh harder that this guy. Royight? Happy to be back on the Orchard today and am excited to see what my little 3.5 liter container of cider will produce in 3 short weeks after fermentation has worked its magic. Ryan's blending team won the competition and he seems to have some natural gifting when it comes to blending cider after its been made. Well done Ryan! I just added nutrients to my take home cider yesterday and its bubbling away.   Happy Holidays friends and family, love your grateful farmer.  (Ps. Mulled Cider is favorite on the farm this time of year and here is a link to a recipe I enjoy. Cheers)

I bought the Farm!

December 12, 2014 Katrina McAlexander

I just want to start out by sharing that I am so incredibly grateful for the amazing parents that I was given by a generous Papa,  Ruthie and Lyle McAlexander set the bar rather high and there is no other people on the planet that I know of that is more generous than these two. They are the real reason that I am even able to buy farm land in the Hood River Valley because its nearly impossibly to afford.  This is sadly a trend that keeps many new farmers out of the farming game because the cost of land has sky rocketed so high that it keeps newbies out.   My heart is sincerely so very grate-FUL and I am hella proud.  On December 10th, 2014 we all signed contracts and I am officially the owner of 50+ acres called Mt. View Orchards. Signed, sealed delivered, I'm yours.....(Only one joke was made by myself about having cold feet that brought on quite the fearful reaction on my parent's faces before going into the lawyers office.  2nd child jokesters unite!)

I am filled with such wild hope and also this sober realization that I am firmly planted here in Parkdale, Oregon.  Home at last! I have a rich history of traveling the world and plan on carrying that one but now at least for part of the year I will be here caring for my land and growing fresh fruit with you all in mind.

The local paper wanted to feature me in an article and I wanted to share it forward to you all today because I am so very honored that they wanted to share more about my journey of carrying on my families farming legacy in the Hood River Valley. Here is a link, and I invite you to check it out dear friends.

Lastly, I don't know where the cliche began that "one" buying the farm meant dying because I feel so very alive right now!!!!  I have never felt more alive in my whole life and I can personally attest that buying a farm is one of the greatest things I have ever done my whole life.  Pinch me!  Did this dream actually come true? Let the Celebrations commence, xoxo your grateful farmer.

Shipping Pears for the Holidays!

December 5, 2014 Katrina McAlexander

December is a really special month around Mt. View Orchards. Its the time of year that we ship our crisp apples and sweet pears all over the United States to our many loyal customers and their lucky family members and friends.  We are so grateful to all the Holiday fruit orders we receive each and every year. Many are from the same loyal costumers and we want to say a wholehearted thank you for all the continued support of our small family farm.  We are so grateful for you all!

We have shipped our farm fresh fruit to every single state in the union and its been a total honor to have people write us and order more after they taste a perfectly ripe comice pear grown with love from our farm.  Pears served on cheese plates or charcuterie boards, apple pies made with fresh Oregon apples, fresh green apples in your juicer with kale and ginger, and making your own sauces, jams and dried fruit really is a treat that brings people together and encourages the warmth and connection of the holidays.

Shipping your family and friends our farm fresh fruit is a very thoughtful and delicious gift.  A healthy alternative to many of the food items that we are indulging in each December and its also an amazing way to help support local farms in your area when you are thinking about giving a gift to your friends and family that live far away.  Here is a link to our website if you want to try shipping our fruit this year to celebrate a season of generosity and extravagant love.  Our most popular gift order is number 3 and 5.  They both a nice variety of apples and pears and we would be happy to help your Holiday gift lists if this year you would like to send our fresh fruit this year.  Also feel free to call us if you have any questions at 5413526554 or email at mtvieworchards@gmail.com

I am so very grateful for you all and your support of your small family farm.  Thank you for following along each week with my blog and all the warm and encouraging notes cheering me on. They have sincerely meant the world to me and I have felt so backed and cared for.  Wishing you all Happy Holidays from your grateful farmer, xoxo

(PS we are still open for self service if you live locally and want to get some fruit to snack on this month or are still wanting to make some apple or pear sauce to put away this year.  Just give us a call ahead to make sure we are here at 5413526554.)

Honeycrisp apples are a favorite @mtvieworchards and today we are going to be sharing some forward with our local food bank. Apples are extremely rich in important antioxidants, flavanoids, and dietary fiber. The phytonutrients and antioxidants in apples may help reduce the risk of developing cancer, hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease. @mtvieworchards we believe everyone deserves to enjoy the best of our 2018 local apple harvests. We have them in our farm stand as well if you want to pick some up for your lunches. #mtvieworchards #afarmthatcares #afarmthatgathers #afarmthatgivesback #apples #honeycrisps
