Its finally October!  And its chilly out!  This morning it was 38 degrees out on the farm thermostat and I was wearing all of my coats as I walked around to see what needed to get accomplished that day.  I am excited to announce that all the pear and apple trees have been mostly picked on our farm.  Thank you to all the apple picking friends for coming out in droves this past weekend and picking our farm fresh fruit. I am grateful for all the farm love. You guys are the truly the best!  We are having one of the best years yet because of all of your wild support and for your intentional efforts to keep our small family farm backed.  Our farm stand is open 7 days a week until November and we are selling over 70 different varieties of already picked farm fresh fruit at our farm stand.   We literally sold out of pumpkins this past weekend but good news we will have more by tomorrow.  My farmer's heart is FULL and I cannot contain my gratitude and joy.

This weekend is Harvest fest weekend and the entire Hood River Valley is throwing a big party celebrating our abundant harvests.  At Mt. View Orchards it means we are going to be baking our famous apple sauce cinnamon rolls and sampling over 20 varieties of our apple or pear sauces on our farm on Saturday.  Have you ever wanted to know what a single varietal apple sauce tasted like? Well this is the weekend to come on out and try them all. We will also have delicious apple and pear pies, Nutty and gooey Swiss Pear bars and vanilla and chocolate pear fudge.   Its going to be a sweet weekend to come out and visit our orchard.  We have all our fresh fruit under canopies so this party is happening rain or shine.  All I want to wear this time of year are sweater dresses, leggings and go on long walks among brightly colored leaves.  Then I want to come home take an extra long hot bath put on long underwear, bake an apple in the oven and watch a favorite movie. October is a good time to get cozy and slow cook apples, pears and squash with butter, cinnamon and cloves. October is the best!

Light coming through the trees on the orchard can be so magical and divine.

Though we have completed harvesting all of our 2014 fruit I want to thank everyone for all the love, encouragement and generosity poured out on me the last few months. This harvest season has been amazing and Ive been taken care of by people in the most incredible ways.  I am beyond thankful for all the thoughtfulness and kindness and I am excited for what the Harvest fest weekend will bring this coming weekend.  Mt. View Orchards proudly grows fruit with you in mind and we would be honored to have you come out this weekend and celebrate the harvest with us on the farm.  xoxo, your grateful farmer

The grateful farmer is a blog about a woman who left her job in the the city to come home to save the family farm.  My desire is to candidly share my journey learning how to farm a 50 acre Orchard at the base of Mt. Hood. I invite you to follow along as I share seasonal recipes, childhood memories, farming successes and failures. Please enjoy the Orchard photos collaging the beautiful seasons and harvests here at Mt. View Orchards. I am grateful and humbled that are you are reading along and want you to know that my farm is your farm.

Honeycrisp apples are a favorite @mtvieworchards and today we are going to be sharing some forward with our local food bank. Apples are extremely rich in important antioxidants, flavanoids, and dietary fiber. The phytonutrients and antioxidants in apples may help reduce the risk of developing cancer, hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease. @mtvieworchards we believe everyone deserves to enjoy the best of our 2018 local apple harvests. We have them in our farm stand as well if you want to pick some up for your lunches. #mtvieworchards #afarmthatcares #afarmthatgathers #afarmthatgivesback #apples #honeycrisps
