Befriending Mt. View Orchards

April 8, 2016 Katrina McAlexander

My family has been farming in the Hood River Valley for nearly 100 years. My grandparents caught the farming fever quickly when they moved to Parkdale, Oregon after they were married.  I have many aunties, uncles, cousins who love growing fruit/making wine/cider for our communities and it is such an honor to learn from and farm besides them. I love being a 3rd generation farmer and my favorite part about carrying on my families farming tradition is greeting all the local customers who come to our farm each and every year to buy fruit from our farm. We are in our 2nd year of launching our All Fruit CSA and it has been a smashing success. I knew of many all vegetable CSA's or some that were mixed with fruit and veggies or sometimes eggs as well but I wondered if my region would appreciate an All Fruit CSA and so many people happily joined in and we had 28 pioneering households last year.  I think we are up to 40 so far this year.  My goal one day is 100 households one day so thank you to everyone who is spreading the word about about fresh, local, tree ripened fruit that comes for 16 weeks in the Summer/Fall. Befriending our farm and choosing to get your fruit from our small family farm is such a gift and we really appreciate everyone who has partnered with us for over 40 years.  If you have any questions please shoot me an email at thegratefulfarmer@gmail.com  This is a delicious and generous way to help your grateful farmer out by joining our CSA.

This week my mother and I went and picked up over 300 new trees and 100 late bearing blueberries for our avid "pick your own," following.  Last year we sadly picked out and i want to ensure we always have enough for those of you who want to have a hands on experience on our farm and learn where your fruit comes from. I love seeing the same smiling faces each year and I want to thank you all for coming each and every year and making our farm, your farm.

Though it was extremely difficult Marla Cyree at Simply Splendid Photography and I were able to pick a lucky couple to WIN for the 2106 Wedding Giveaway. Huge Congratulations to Ethan and Kai!  All the stories we read were absolutely beautiful but their story stood out to Marla and myself and they are currently living in Amsterdam but plan on coming out for their Wedding on August 27th, 2016.  Thank you to all the amazing and brave couples who applied, stay tuned I think I want to do this every year. Big LOVE to you all.

Last evening, was absolutely magical and I invited some of my new favorites to come for dinner on the farm.  Our neighbors down the road decided to come up with their two horses, Wilma and Bette.  It was a treat for sure and I was so thankful I left my life in the city and decided the brave it in the country buying my families farm. Each month holds a new adventure and some how the bills continue to be paid.  For this I am so thankful and grateful for all your good and steady backing friends and future friends of Mt. View Orchards.   xoxo your grateful farmer, Trina xoxo

Honeycrisp apples are a favorite @mtvieworchards and today we are going to be sharing some forward with our local food bank. Apples are extremely rich in important antioxidants, flavanoids, and dietary fiber. The phytonutrients and antioxidants in apples may help reduce the risk of developing cancer, hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease. @mtvieworchards we believe everyone deserves to enjoy the best of our 2018 local apple harvests. We have them in our farm stand as well if you want to pick some up for your lunches. #mtvieworchards #afarmthatcares #afarmthatgathers #afarmthatgivesback #apples #honeycrisps
